Applying:
-
Want to live and study in someplace new.
-
Ranking and weather

I didn’t have time to do too much research on schools, so I applied to a lot of schools just to be safe. I was short on time in terms of exam preparation so most of the focus was on SAT and TOEFL. For graduate school, the decision to apply was made in a rush so not much preparation either. Just took GRE once and wrote my applications to schools that offer STEM degrees.
Study:
-
Studying pressure is not high but the pressure to maintain a leadership position in student organizations, finding internships were high for undergrad. In general, graduate school is easier than undergrad.
-
Besides the time spend in class, I usually leave 3 hours to study per day? It varies.
-
There are numerous libraries to choose from and they all look pretty cool. There are two gyms with a good amount of selections.
-
On-campus cafeterias suck. Restaurants nearby are average. Not impressed by the food here in general. There are around 8? Parking lots on or campus so parking is fine as long as I secure a spot before each school years starts.
-
School is good. All the resources are available here. I can’t comment too much on the quality because it didn’t use them that much. For career fair, it is kind of useless for international students because all the big firms that come to the career fair does not provide sponsorship. Writing centre and student advising program are helpful for students with specific needs.
-
Student housing is fair. It is kind of expensive when you share a room with another student, and share a bathroom with another 3 students while paying >$1000 every month. The housing around campus is expensive too, while the quality is on the low side. The apartments in Downtown LA or other better neighbourhood (usually ~$1500 per person) have much higher quality, but students need a car if they don’t live on campus.
Living in the city: (LA)
-
School is SO EXPENSIVE. Living cost is relatively higher than other areas in US.
-
I find LA to be diverse and dynamic. It is a great city to be in with everything you might possibly need, and perfect weather. Shopping and clubs are all good. If you are Asian than LA is the best place to be in – too many food choices.
-
Transportation: definitely need a car if you want a convenient life. Public transportation in LA is poor. Uber would work too.
